PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla., – Talking trash is sometimes the name of the game when it comes to friendly, competitive fishing. That’s the case when Capt. Justin Leake invites redfish tournament professional Fred Myers to join him for a day in Fish On Smack, this week’s episode of “Chasin’ The Sun.” The award-winning television show, presented by Visit Panama City Beach, will air on Saturday, January 15 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern & Pacific / 7:30 a.m. Central on Discovery Channel.
Leake and Fred Myers are lifelong friends but it’s sometimes hard to tell once the good-natured ribbing starts. Even as teammates on the tournament trail, they have always competed against each other in a never-ending battle for bragging rights. It’s their way of challenging each other to become better anglers.
It’s a windy and choppy day on the Gulf of Mexico, but Capt. Leake and Myers agree that adjusting to the conditions is just a part of the fishing experience. Myers is more concerned with how to adapt his redfishing skills to the much larger and acrobatic tarpon.
“My challenge is what to do once I hook one,” says Myers. “If a redfish jumped like a tarpon, you’d never catch one.”
Capt. Leake is familiar with these waters, so it doesn’t take long to find some large schools of tarpon migrating along the coastline. Even though Myers’ experience fighting redfish pays off with the silver kings, it’s unlikely to bring an end to the teasing from Capt. Leake.
Later in the episode, we check out the “Pirates of the High Seas Fest,” a pirate-themed family-friendly event that draws thousands of swashbucklers to Panama City Beach every October.
The fishing and coastal lifestyle television program showcases the diverse angling, diving and cultural opportunities found in the emerald-green waters of Panama City Beach. Season seven sponsors of “Chasin’ The Sun” include Dulce Vida Tequila, Florida Watersports, Holiday Inn Resort, Humminbird, Minn Kota and Pirates Cove Marina.
Produced in partnership with Pinfish Media, new episodes of “Chasin’ The Sun” will air January through June during Discovery Channel’s Saturday morning outdoor programming schedule. Previous episodes of “Chasin’ The Sun” are available for online viewing at www.ChasinTheSunTV.com.
