Martha Guyas Designated to International Tuna Conservation Commission 

On January 31, Martha Guyas, southeast fisheries policy director for the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), was designated by the U.S. Department of State as alternate commissioner to the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) representing recreational fishing interests.

“Decisions at ICCAT often have direct implications for our community,” said Guyas. “I am honored to have the opportunity to represent recreational fishing interests as part of the United States delegation at ICCAT.”

SHARKED Act Could See Vote this Week 

The Supporting the Health of Aquatic Systems through Research, Knowledge and Enhanced Dialogue (SHARKED) Act (H.R. 4051) is slated to receive a vote from the U.S. House of Representatives this week. If passed, the bill would create a task force to study shark depredation and present management strategies that consider impacts to recreational anglers.

$20.6 Million Made Available for California Salmon Disaster Recovery 

Last week, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced it would make $20.6 million available to address a fisheries disaster in Sacramento River Fall Chinook and Klamath River Fall Chinook inland and ocean fisheries. The process for distributing these funds will be decided by the state of California in the coming months. ASA’s continues to have conversations with California Fish & Wildlife to advocate for our industry’s inclusion in the state’s spending plan.

Mike Leonard Appointed to Interagency Advisory Council 

ASA’s vice president of government affairs, Mike Leonard, was recently appointed to the Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council. Mike will represent the saltwater and freshwater recreational fishing community.  

The Council consists of up to 19 members appointed by the Secretaries of Interior and Commerce. Each serves for up to three years.  Learn More
