ASA Prepares to Weigh in on Atlantic Cod
In early May, ASA’s Atlantic Fisheries Policy Director, Mike Waine, attended an Atlantic cod management transition workshop hosted by the New England Fishery Management Council. The workshop was an early look at a two-phase plan to transition from two cod stocks to a new four stock model supported by recent scientific findings and genetic analysis. A management track assessment is scheduled for later this year which will provide stock status determinations for the newly identified four stock units. However preliminary data suggest the Atlantic cod stocks are still in need of rebuilding.
