Crappie USA Winter Classic Championship Travels to St. Johns River, FL

Louisville, KY – Crappie USA begins its 26th year of providing competitive fishing to crappie anglers in 2022. They are kicking off the year on the St. Johns River with their first Winter Classic Championship. Anglers will travel from across the country to compete out of Deland, FL. Anglers fishing the event on January 14-15, 2022 will be vying for a $15,000 payout and an opportunity to compete in the 2022 CUSA Classic.

New Cash and Prizes minimum guaranteed paybacks for 2022 include 100% at Local Events, $15,000 at Super Events, and $20,000 at Mega Events. Anglers may qualify for the CUSA Classic through any of these events and Points Race. Beginning in 2022 teams must be preregistered for the Classic by October 1, 2022, to avoid a $100.00 late fee.

The St. Johns River event is presented by Bass Pro Shops/Cabela’s and hosted by Visit West Volusia Tourism. The top 3 teams in each division qualify for the 2022 Classic on Kentucky and Barkley Lakes out of Paris, Tennessee.

The St. Johns River is known for its beautiful black crappies. Two-pound specks are not unusual as this stretch of river consistently produces good stringers of black crappie by a variety of methods. Spider rigging, long-lining, and one poling all work well.

Because of the abundance of crappie, the St. Johns River around Deland, FL is also a popular vacation destination so bring the whole crew. Legal waters for the Winter Classic will be Lake George to the I-4 bridge. Pre-fishing is encouraged but must stop at midnight before the tournament.

There are plenty of lodging opportunities and other amenities in the area to accommodate visiting anglers and their families. Visitors will find more than good crappie fishing. Deland is just minutes away from the boat ramp and it is well populated with dining opportunities to fit anyone’s desires. As they say on their website, “Every place you dine is where the locals go.”

How to Enter

Teams may consist of one or two anglers, with a third member allowed if the angler is under the age of 16 years old. Early registration can be accomplished on the CUSA website at Teams may also enter by calling (502) 384-5924. Entry fees vary by the length of the tournament. All fees are posted on the website linked above. Late Fee applies within 14 days of the event.

Participating anglers must be a member of the American Crappie Association (ACA). Sign up at where the various levels of membership are available. Each membership will include a subscription to the Crappie Digest, the official publication of Crappie USA.

The Classic Championship

The CUSA Classic Championship will be held October 13th – 15th on Kentucky and Barkley Lakes, Paris, TN. The 2022 Classic presented by Bass Pro Shops/Cabela’s features a guaranteed payout of $165,000 in cash and prizes.
