Get Ready to Fish with Wisconsin Natural Resources Magazine

MADISON, Wis. – Get a jumpstart on planning for the May 1 general fishing opener with expanded fishing coverage in the Spring issue of Wisconsin Natural Resources magazine.

“It’s Reel Time,” as the magazine’s cover story notes, and that means everything you need to go fish – especially for beginners. From tips on getting started to species identification to a list of needed gear, the magazine covers all the basics and more.

Several other stories also tackle fishing, including a feature on bait shop owner Tommy White, Milwaukee’s “Dean of the Urban Angling Scene.” A related story tells how science and art came together at UW-Milwaukee to create unique fish habitat maps of the city’s underwater world. And engaging first-person viewpoints address “Perspectives on Fishing and the Outdoors.”

“Foraging for Food” finds a place in the magazine, with a wealth of information on how to put good eats on the table. In “Park Hoppers,” a Madison couple who visited all but one Wisconsin state park last year shares their story and scenic photos.

New Chief State Forester Heather Berklund, the first woman to hold the position, answers questions on a wide range of topics, including the Division of Forestry’s efforts to address water, climate change, rural prosperity and public health issues as part of the DNR’s overall strategic goals.

Other stories in the Spring issue cover DNR loan programs that aid in the removal of lead pipe water service lines, and an update on Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin field trips. All the magazine’s regular features are here, too, from a “Back in the Day” on pandemic quilting to Secretary Preston D. Cole’s message urging readers to “welcome your own personal spring” with new outdoor adventures that await.
