On December 4, Cadiz Kentucky Police Department reported on their Facebook page that a local magnet angler had landed an object believed to be a live 40mm grenade:
As you may already be aware, South Road, between US68 and Main Street, is currently closed. An object, believed to be a 40mm grenade, was located by someone magnet fishing on the bridge.
Fort Campbell EOD is on scene, assisting in the removal of the device. They are working diligently to safely remove the device from the area. It is possible that the device will be “destroyed in place” if it is determined it can’t be safely moved. The area EOD is working in is free of businesses and residences, so there is no need for any closures or evacuations.
Officers are on scene and coordinating with EOD, and will make dispatch aware of any changes in the situation. We will provide updates, if needed.
We ask that all citizens remain clear of the area and find alternate routes to navigate around downtown, until we provide notice that the roadway is reopened. Thank you!!
And then on December 18, another grenade was landed by a magnet angler as reported by the Cadiz Police Department via Facebook:
South Road, between US68 and Main Street, is currently closed as another grenade was pulled from the river by an individual magnet fishing.
Fort Campbell EOD is on their way to the scene. They intend to destroy the grenade on scene, so you will once again hear an explosion, most likely in the next hour or so. The area EOD is working in is free of businesses and residences, so there is no need for any closures or evacuations.
We ask that all citizens remain clear of the area and find alternate routes to navigate around downtown, until we provide notice that the roadway is reopened. Thank you!!
Both devices were disposed of without incident.
