MDC Offers Free Catfishing Clinic

St. Joseph, Mo. – Catfish are among the top sportfish because anglers enjoy catching them and they make fine table fare, too. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free Discover Nature — Fishing catfish clinic from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, at the Belcher Branch Lake Conservation Area near Faucett in Buchanan County.

Catfish are found in most Missouri waters, which also makes them popular. Anglers catch channel, blue, flathead, and bullhead catfish using live or prepared baits fished with rod and reel or set lines. Brandon Johnson and Kelsey Gillenwater, MDC conservation education assistants, will discuss what underwater habitats each catfish species prefers and good methods to catch them. Participants will then go fishing in Belcher Branch Lake. MDC will provide all fishing tackle and bait and instructors will assist anglers.

This clinic is open to all ages, individuals and families are welcome. Missouri residents over age 15 and under 65 need a valid fishing permit. Non-residents over 15 need a state fishing permit. COVID-19 safety precautions will be observed. Registration is required. To register, visit https://short.mdc.mo.gov/4wH.
