New Jersey Announces Striped Bass Recreational Regulations Webinar

The NJ Marine Fisheries Council will meet by webinar Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at 6:00 pm to discuss regulatory changes for the recreational striped bass fishery.

In May, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) implemented emergency regulations in the coastal recreational striped bass fishery to prevent overfishing and promote stock rebuilding.

NJ’s current regulations include one fish at 28” to less than 38”. The new regulations, which must be implemented by all states by July 2, 2023, include a one fish limit and a slot size limit of 28” to less than 31”. States that fail to implement these regulations are subject to a federally imposed moratorium. The emergency regulations do not affect NJ’s Striped Bass Bonus Program, but the program would be subject to the moratorium if NJ is found out of compliance.

During the June 20 meeting, the Marine Fisheries Council will review available data, receive a report from the Striped Bass Committee and advisors, and hear public comment before taking final action. This is an online meeting only.
