New York has another new state record fish! On May 13, just 10 days after the channel catfish state record was broken, Alex Pidhorodeckyj reeled in a 20.25 inch, 4 lb. 1 oz. fallfish while jigging for walleye and northern pike on the St. Lawrence River. The record-breaking fish was caught on a purple paddle tail swimbait. Congratulations Alex!!
Fun Fact: Fallfish are the largest native minnow species in New York and are commonly found in medium-size streams to large, warmwater rivers in slow-moving water. Anglers don’t often target fallfish, so they’re usually caught when fishing for other species like smallmouth bass or trout. They also have a reputation for putting up a good fight when hooked. If you’re interested in fishing for fallfish try a fly rod or light action spinning rod rigged with a small spoon, spinner, jig or live bait.
