On the morning of September 16, 2021, The Fisherman Magazine’s senior editor Fred Golofaro passed away at 69. A member of The Fisherman’s staff since 1976, Fred previously had served as editorial director, associate editor, managing editor, associate publisher, and publisher. But as his coworkers would tell you, he will always be the heart and soul of the publication, if not the recreational fishing community as a whole. In fact, to countless fishermen along the Striper Coast, he always be known simply as Uncle Fred.
On November 2, 2021, a team from The Fisherman and Gray Fishtag Research deployed the sixth MiniPAT tracking device of the 2021 Northeast Striped Bass Study season into a 48-inch striped bass that was aptly and affectionately named Uncle Fred. Earlier this year, that high-tech satellite tracking device popped off that big fish, where rather remarkably it was found near Tangier Island in the Chesapeake Bay nearly three months to the day of the deployment.
The May edition of The Fisherman Magazine has all the details on Uncle Fred’s migration route down the Atlantic Coast as it settles into the Chesapeake Bay region during the first quarter of 2022 before the spring spawn. Learn more at thefisherman.com.
