Okuma Fishing Tackle, a manufacturer driven by angler feedback and purpose-built innovation, announces the launch of the new Makaira LBS Custom Rod Series, engineered in collaboration with land-based shark fishing (LBSF) professionals to take on the most demanding battles in sportfishing.
Land-based shark fishing represents one of the most extreme and specialized disciplines in angling, where success is measured in endurance and uncompromising gear performance. Built to complement the Makaira LBS reel platform, the new rod series was developed alongside dedicated LBSF anglers who spend countless hours targeting the ocean’s largest predators from shore. Their input shaped every detail, resulting in a rod designed to perform under relentless pressure.
At its core, the Makaira LBS Rod Series is constructed using a 24-ton carbon and E-glass blank, delivering maximum lifting power and structural strength for extended fights. These rods are purpose-built not just to apply pressure, but to endure it, maintaining integrity through long-duration battles with species such as hammerhead and tiger sharks. Okuma’s Ultimate Matrix Reinforcement (UMR) technology strengthens the rod blank by reinforcing high-stress areas, resulting in increased lifting power and durability under extreme loads. For the LBS Custom Land Based Shark Rods, this means more confidence when applying maximum pressure to big sharks from the beach without sacrificing overall rod power.
“A land-based shark angler is looking for a tool that can survive hours of extreme load without compromise,” said John Bretza, VP of Product Development at Okuma. “There are no shortcuts in this category. We engineered the Makaira LBS rods with survival-grade durability and the control needed to fight the biggest fish on earth.”
Every model in the series is built for harsh saltwater environments, featuring corrosion-resistant components and premium hardware. ALPS HXN guides with Zirconium inserts come standard across the lineup, while 7’9” models incorporate ALPS RX series roller tip guides and detachable aluminum butts. The 7’6” models feature machined aluminum reel seats and integrated gimbals for added strength and stability.
The Makaira LBS Rod Series is backed by a three-year limited warranty.
