Possible New Smallmouth Fishery in Arkansas

AGFC Fisheries biologists found a nice surprise recently while sampling Gillham Lake in southwest Arkansas. A few smallmouth bass were part of the fall sampling.

They were all found along the rocky area of the dam. These fish were all 6-7 inches and their presence, AGFC biologists say, of good things to come at Gillham Lake.

The AGFC’s Hope regional office asks anglers to let them know if they happen to hook into a bigger smallmouth this winter; it may just be one of these young fishes’ parents.

Gillham Lake is a small reservoir situated along the Cossatot River, mostly in Howard County but also extending westward into Polk County. It’s 6 miles from the town of Gillham.
