Volunteers Needed for Oyster Project April 17 in New Smyrna Beach
32 volunteers are needed to help our partners at the Marine Discovery Center (MDC) in New Smyrna Beach on April 17. Come out and help build the new oyster volcanoes, a non-plastic oyster material alternative recently developed by MDC. Their goal is to replace some of the oyster bags used along shorelines with these newly designed cement volcanoes. They will act as a wave break to help reduce erosion and hold on to plants, and they will also act as a stable base for oysters who are attracted to their cement base.
Volunteers will need to wear closed toe shoes and clothes they don’t mind getting extremely dirty. Masks and eye protection (buff and sunglasses are fine) will be required due to the proximity of cement. Water and snacks will be provided for volunteers. The workshops will run from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. and 1 – 4 p.m., and 16 volunteers are needed for each workshop. RSVP to Frank Gidus.
